At What Moisture Level Does Mold Grow in Drywall?
Mold spores are present in the air we breathe both indoors and outdoors. They begin to grow when they land on a surface with moisture, warmth, and a food source such as drywall.
Drywall has a gypsum core which contains gypsum, paper, and water. When drywall gets wet, the paper and gypsum can become a food source for mold. Mold growth can occur when the moisture content of drywall reaches 12% or higher.
High humidity levels can contribute to mold growth in drywall. Humidity levels should be kept below 50% to prevent mold growth.
It is important to keep drywall dry to prevent mold growth. If drywall does get wet, it should be dried out as quickly as possible.
